Wimberley P&Z

22 01 2010

By unanimous approval of last night’s consent agenda (which contained a number of administrative items), the Wimberley City Council saw fit to appoint me to to the Planning and Zoning Commission here in Wimberley.  I was nominated by Councilman Steve Thurber, and will serve a term concurrent to his term on the City Council.  Councilman Thurber, by the way, is up for re-election in May of this year.

I’m proud and happy to be in a position to serve the City I’ve come to know and love over the past few years.  I look forward to working with my new colleagues, and will bring to this appointment all the effort, attention, and seriousness it deserves   –   and I hope to have some fun in the process!

Sad news

7 01 2010

We lost Xena last night.  She’s been fighting kidney failure for these past couple of weeks, and she died last night.  We will so miss her – at age 5 and a half, she was a special member of the family, and had each of our hearts in the palm of her paw…  Anyone who’s ever lost a special pet will know what I mean, but there are really no words to express how empty the house feels today.

The kids are troupers, and are holding up well.  They helped with her care over the past couple of weeks and the emergency visit to the vet last night – we couldn’t ask for better, more thoughtful kids.

Goodbye Xena, go now in peace.  You were loved, and never knew cruelty or want.  In return, we know you gave us everything you had.  Good dog.

Xena

Xena recouping - hopefully a little rest, food, and love will bring her around.

Xena isn’t feeling well – but we can’t figure it out.  She’s been drinking an *excessive* amount of water over the past couple of weeks (and peeing commensurately).  We’ve been to the vet three times now, and we may be getting a handle on it, but we’re still not sure exactly what’s happening.  Her liver enzymes are up, but there’s nothing else going on in the blood work / urinalysis.  She’s had an ultrasound of her abdomen and heart, and a Fine Needle Aspiration analysis of liver cells.  Nothing yet.   So we’re on some meds, some supplements, and trying to get her to eat and drink – and seeing what happens.  Positive thoughts, if you could, for the dog – she’s special to the family.

Retail Clerk

3 01 2010

For Christmas, Kiana received a gift card from a local clothing store at the Outlet Mall.  The store is a hip, young-person’s venue – the clothes are vibrant and fresh, the clerks are all tattooed and pierced, and the music is loud.  So – on the day after Christmas, we had to take a trip to the Outlet Mall.  Yes, along with seemingly every other yay-hoo on the planet, we wended our way through the traffic and lines of bargain-seekers, and went to the store.

We found what she wanted, a hoodie with some character, and we went up to the counter to pay out.  The clerk was less-than-attentive, and rang us up with little fanfare.  Kiana said “thank you” at the end of the transaction – the clerk said nothing.  I looked him in the eye, and said “thank you” very slowly – he got the message, but it was clear there was no lesson to be learned, and equally clear this job was but a layover on his much more grandiose life plan.  The kids and I talked about life choices on the way out of the store.

Later that evening, Kiana was eager to wear her new jacket to meet up with some friends in town.  As she was putting on the jacket, she noticed the anti-theft tag still on the jacket.  Disappointed, we agreed to go back to San Marcos before the Winter break was over.   The silver lining was our subsequent conversation about service, the effort you put into your job, and the impact it has on others.

We went back to the store today and received an equally-chilly reception and service event – as expected – but we got the tag off the jacket, and Kiana wore it out, happily.  Funny – she wasn’t interested in looking around the store, and sticking around to do any more shopping there…    In all, a good day.

Happy New Year

1 01 2010

2009 is over, and none too soon, either.  I’m so looking forward to 2010, as if the flip of the calendar can simply provide that much-needed cathartic relief and injection of optimism that we all need from time to time…

Speaking to a friend last night, I was reminded that it’s all mindset.  I *know* this – I just have to live it, and the reminder was both timely and helpful.

Here’s hoping 2010 is a fantastic year for all, in the many ways we all experience life.
